As to recall the history of the discovery of the Relict Gull ,the first and single skin of the bird was obtained by Swedish ornithologist Elonnberg at Tsondol, a locality at the extreme western part of Inner Mongolia, during his expedition to South Gobi around 1929, but virtually regarded a good gull species in 1971, after a long argument on the status of its taxonomy . And, before the ordos colony, the two known breeding colonies of the gull showed so far apart from each other, Lonely at the Alakol Lake of Kazakhstan and at the Torey Lakes in the Far East Russia respectively, while , the finding of the new breeding colony in Ordos brought with it a totally new understanding to theornithology on the status of the breeding subpopulations of the bird in worldwide.
