本书以2008年“5.12”汶川大地震为对象，较为系统地研究和阐述了汶川大地震发生的构造背景以及触发地质灾害的发育特征、发生机理及其评价预测。重点分析了崩塌滑坡地质灾害的分布规律、斜坡强震的动力响应及破裂失稳机理、斜坡物质运动特征，震后泥石流灾害的发育特征、预测评价及危险性分析，以及崩塌滑坡堵江的形成过程、堰塞坝稳定性、溃坝机理及风险评估等。针对灾后恢复重建，提出了灾区地质环境应急评价的原则，并探讨了若干重点损毁城镇的灾后重建选址问题。
