The present memoir is substantial in content, involving a wide interest. The fossil flora described in the memoir is composed of 162 different forms of the Carboniferous and Permian Period. Sze described them systematically and ascribed them to 53 genera. two new genera and 25 species first found in this area were erected while Sze prepared this manuscript. The flora, which bears a typical Cathaysian flora aspect, is an important component of the world-famous Cathaysian flora. The fossil flora described by Sze contains representatives of the principal groups of vascular plants in Carboniferous and Permian. Some of them had been studied earlier by Sze for their importance, and the results were published under the titles "On the occurrence of a new species of Callipteris of the Kusnetzk type in the Cathaysian flora in Northwestern Shanxi" (1954) and " A petrified wood from Inner Mongolia"(1962). Through the critical study and analysis of the flora and the correlation of fossil beds, the distribution of the flora elements in Carboniferous and Permian is revealed.
