为了保护长江流域的生物多样性，世界自然基金会组织开展了长江流域生物多样性分布格局与优先保护规划的研究，以促进该流域自然资源的保护与合理开发利用，实现人与自然的和谐共处，同时为“WWF长江生态区2010～2015年规划”提供依据，也可为相关部门决策提供参考。
为了生态系统和野生动植物栖息地的完整性，《长江流域生物多样性格局与保护图集》将青藏高原羌塘自然保护区、若尔盖地区、秦岭北坡、浙江钱?江流域、湖南省与江西省的全省纳入了评价与规划范围。
