This book, edited on the occasion of the 55the Executive Meeting of International Commission on Large Dams held in Beijing, China, is mainly intended to give the oversea dam engineers a comprehnsiv account of the development of large dams technology in China. It is arangd in three parts, namely, large dam construction, major dams and statistical data, and contains 192 photos and drawings.
Part I bgins with featuring the unusual Chinese ancient dams and weirs throughout the historical period of several thousand years and then goes on to describe the highlights of achievements and experiences of Chinese practice in building 83000 dams over the past 38 years, with particular accent on factual data of Chinese dams, wide range of dam types, flood release and energy dissipation, foundation treatment, construction methods, research activities of related topics, dam monitoring and so on.
Part II presents 28 specially selected case studies of representative completed and proposed dams, which reflect in general the state-of-the-art of dam technology in China. Each example speaks for its own fascinating peculiarities worthwhile for documentation as reference.
Part III gives informative statistical data, including register of all large dams exceeding 40 m in height, sketch profiles of typical cascade dvlopment of rivers, filing of special dam types, etc.
