Sima Guang [1019-1086], courtesy name Junshi, self-styled art nameYusou, is respectfully known to later generations as Master Sushui. Born in Guangshan, Guang Prefecture, with his ancestral hometown in Xia County, Shan Prefecture [modern-day Xia County, Shanxi Province], he was an outstanding statesman, historian and litterateur of the Northern Song Dynasty. As the chief compiler of the monumental annalistic history Zizhi Tongjian, he spent over 10 years leading the compilation of this landmark work, which records 1,362 years of Chinese history and stands as one of the most influential classical historical texts in Chinese civilization.
English Translator: Wu Gaolin, former senior diplomat and Chairman of Hong Kong Intellectual Property Exchange, graduated from Shanghai International Studies University and pursued further study in the United States. He coordinates all English translation and revision of this book. He devoted more than 30 years to the full translation of Zizhi Tongjian starting from the 1990s. In the later stage of the project, Frederic Wakeman Jr. [chief interpreter during Nixon's China visit), Harvard sinologists Peter Bol and Newton were invited as advisors. Led by Professor Peter Bol, a seven-member faculty and student team participated in full-text revision and stylistic unification, greatly improving the professionalism and integrity of the translation.
Mordern vernacular Chinese translation: Zhang Dake, graduated from the Classical Chinese Documents Program, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Peking University. He currently serves as Standing Director of the Chinese Society of Historical Documents and President of the Chinese Society for Records of the Grand Historian. A leading scholar dedicated to the research of Chinese historical documents and the history of the Qin, Han and Three Kingdoms periods, he has published a large body of academic works and developed a distinctive, independent research framework, earning wide recognition in the field of Chinese historiography.
