A relatively complete plan for the research on earthquake prediction has been formally drawn up and gradually put into practice in China after the strong Xingtai earthquake of 1966. Large amount of scientifically valuable data have been obtained and a set of methods of prediction have been proposed and gradually estimated through the practice of forecasting while observing and studying. Much experience in prediction has thus been accumulated. Some successes in real prediction play an active role in mitigating earthquake hazard,. Therefore , 1983 the state seismological Bureau made the plan for further study and solving the difficult problem of earthquake prediction in order to promote research. As the first stage of the plan, over 200 scientists and technologists of earthquake science in China were organized to carry out the research on sorting out the techniques for earthquake prediction and estimating strong seismic risk.
This book, including 31 paper carefully chosen, is the result of the research.
