China is the earliest nation of developing and utilizing natural gas in the world and the Sichuan basin is one of the earliest districts of utilizing natural gas in our country. According to historical record, a well with a depth of about 180m had been drilled at Huojinggou, 50km west of the Qionlai county town, Sichuan, in 53~18 B.C. to exploit natural gas for making salt. It was beginning to do so in Ziliujing gas field in A.D. 76~88 and a well with a depth of 250m had been drilled in A.D. 281~300. A lot of specific geologists engaging in determining location of wells, studing subsurface geology and judging storage nature of gas and water were successively appearing in A.D. 1640~1650. Up to now, the geologic data of some gas wells are still preserved being a treasure of gas field development data in our country. Through a long practice, a set of special gas field geologic research methods and drilling-producing technologies have been created gradually, of which many are still of great importance up to now. In light of statistics, up to the late 1940;s, 10000 wells in total had been drilled and a large amount of natural gas and salt water had been produced in Ziliujing gas field.

The "Atlas" is composed of 472 figures in 224 layouts which belong to 87 categories in 12 series.
