《不列颠昆虫志》是爱德华·多诺万（Edward Donovan.1768-1837）的一部博物学著作。多诺万是英国博物学家，生于爱尔兰的科克，曾是伦敦林奈学会会员。在那个博物学家和收藏家纷纷开设个人博物馆的时代，1807年他也在伦敦设立了博物学研究所，展示数百件动物标本与植物标本。他本人并不去海外采集标本，而是运用自己良好的社会关系，委托包括约瑟夫·班克斯和詹姆斯·库克在内的诸多探险家为自己丁作，因而得以聚集起大量罕见标本。对这些标本的研究帮助他出版了诸多负有盛名的博物学著作，如《不列颠珍稀鸟类志》《中国昆虫志》《印度昆虫志》。多诺万亲自制作铜版并调色，使书中的画色彩尽可能鲜艳逼真，加上展示了一批与他有特殊关系的相关人士搞到的珍稀标本，因此这些著作一经出版其声名就居于当时同类作品的前列。

 

　　《不列颠昆虫志》初版刊行于1792年，此时作者的事业正值盛期。全书凡十六卷共3520页，附有约500幅根据实体标本测量、描绘的精美彩图。和之前的《不列颠贝类志》一样，作者在设计绘制这些插画时，不仅进行单体展示，而且根据分类并通过巧妙的构图，在每幅画中展现各类昆虫的实际大小比例、同一昆虫的生长变态各阶段.并往往将它们画进生活环境中。这样的创作，无扎实的昆虫学知识绝难胜任。
