目前学术界已经公认鸟类起源于恐龙，但普通大众仍然认为恐龙已经灭绝。本书旨在介绍恐龙演变成鸟类的过程，尤其是中国发现的长羽毛恐龙和鸟类化石为鸟类起源研究提供的重要化石证据，重点介绍恐龙到鸟类演化过程的中间环节——热河鸟类，它同时具有兽脚类恐龙和鸟类的镶嵌特征，被认为是较德国始祖鸟稍微进步的最基干的鸟类代表，为研究鸟类起源及早期演化提供了关键依据，最后介绍热河鸟类的研究现状和研究进展。
