洛阳在东西方丝绸贸易中得天独厚的人文地理学优势的揭示,是本书学术研究的目标之一。这其中的一个重点的问题,便是崇义乡、感德乡两个胡人侨乡兴生聚落因大运河输丝而形成与扩大的人文成因。所以,本书回溯北魏“四里”“四坊”沿伊洛河岸边而设置的地望选择取向,实亦指出隋唐东都继承魏晋运河模式的都城水文传统。
在此基础上,本著从唐都洛阳定鼎门遗址大规模骆驼蹄印痕迹的考古发现,管窥交通史视域下展现出的李唐王朝对丝绸贸易市场管理职能及行政责任职能的重视——只有经过国家市场“税后贸易”的驼运,始能享受唐属丝路全程的行政服务——这无疑会降低驼运贩丝的总体交通成本。
这样看来,当年洛阳城东漕河两岸感德乡、崇义乡胡人部落推波助澜而形成的“税前贸易”,只能视为国家行政贸易之后的一种辅助贸易形式。
而所有这些官、私贸易,都依赖于南运河对丝绸之路“水文输丝”的对接。洛阳之处于丝路枢纽地位的城际职能,自不待言地显示着它丝绸之路起点城市的人文价值。
