本书收载吴征镒院士从事植物分类学、植物系统学、植物地理学、植被学、植物生态学、植物资源学和保护生物学等学科的学术论著72篇，基本反映吴征镒院士从业七十余年中各个时期科学研究的成就，也反映我国在上述学科领域的某些自主创新的成果。本书还载有吴征镒院士的九十自述，从他自幼寄兴于植物，到后来把植物学作为一生执著追求的志向，学术上追本穷源，成就斐然，其中的为人治学之道给人以启迪和教益。
