This map shows the spatial distribution and water resources of the present glaciers, and the geomorphological features in the Himalayas. The Himalayas lies on the north of the India subcontinent and south of the high plateau of central Asia, which can be deseripted as a gigantic west-east are assembling a flying eagle.Bounded by the Indus River on the west slope of Mt.Nanga Parbat(8 125m a.s.l.) nearby Medog,Qinghai-Xizang(Tibet) plateau,China,in the east, this world's highest arcuate mountain system stretches over 2400 km in the west-east direction. The north edge of the Himalayas is the suturalzone of the Eurasia Plate and the India Plate(i,e.,Indus River-Mapam yumco Lake-Yarlung Zangbo River),and the Sub Himalayas at about 3000 m a.s.l. consists of the south edge. The width of the Himalayas in the north-south direction is over 200 km. This map is compiled according to 1975-1978 Landsat MSS 7 and false-color images, together with some aerial-photos for identifying the present glacier distribution.Despite the fact that the Himalayas spans across several geo-political units, and the base maps are with different accuracy for different Himalayan regions,we have tried our best to reduce the errors to the least degree. The error for landsat image interpretation is about +(-)5% .Nevertheless, the mapping of the glaciers in the territory of China is more accurate than in the Kashmir.Glacier number is compiled according to Introduction to the compilling and editing of world glaciers (F.Miller,1977).
