   This is a proceedings of the international conference that held in Beijing in Sept. of 2010. PIMXXXIII gathered about 300 participants in Beijing, People’s Republic of China to discuss Oceans, Climate Change & Sustainable Development especially in the light of the Challenges to Oceans & Coastal Cities, another theme of the Conference was the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the UNESCO/IOC.
    PIMXXXIII, titled “Oceans, Climate Change and Sustainable Development: Challenges to Oceans and Coastal Cities”, provided a forum for intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, governments, as well as scientists and experts to address the challenges to oceans and coastal cities, to explore scientific understanding of the impacts on and of the ocean, to discuss policies on the use and protection of the oceans in supporting economic development, to identify measures for adaptation and mitigation efforts, to share experiences and best practices in order to make better and more livable coastal cities, and also to advance ocean science.
    Apart from a High Level Segment, Plenary and Parallel Sessions were organised around 3 major themes concerning the conference topics. The chosen themes for discussion were (1) Oceans and Climate Change; (2) The Role of Oceans in Sustainable Development; and (3) Challenges to Coastal Cities. The Conference has yielded several documents including a Conference Declaration based on the deliberations of scientists, experts and managers having addressed the specificity of ocean,climate change and sustainable development and challenges to oceans and coastal cities.
