The intrinsic nonlinearity of atmospheric motions is one of the frontiers of atmospheric sciences. In order to summarize what we have learned about and how is the "state of the art" of this field, an International Summer Colloquium on Nonlinear Dynamics of the Atmosphere was held in Beijing, China from 10 to 20 August 1986, organized by Laboratory of Numerical Modelling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Institute of Atmospheric physics, Academia Sinica. More than sixty attendants and one hundred participants from different countries attended the Colloquium.
The Colloquium was composed of five parts, i.e., nonlinear waves; multiple equilibration, bifurcation, catastrophe and chaos; interaction between waves and bas'ic current; dynamical instability and general behaviours of the atmosphere; and computation method and computation instability. Most of these papers or abstracts are collected in this volume.
