Hebei province lies in the eastern part of North China, facing the Bohai Sea on the east. Beijing municipality, the Capital of China, is situated in its center and Tianjin Municipality, on the coast of the Bohai Sea in its eastern part. The region of Hebei province, Beijing Municipality and Tianjin Municipality, sea areas excluded, has a total land area of nearly 220, 00 sq km. There the stratigraphic sequence is complete and magmatic activity was intense. Rich mineral resources lie buried in the region. For iron, coal, gold and metallurgical ancillary raw materials, their reserves rank high among those of the whole country. Besides, the vast plain area and the continental shelf of the Bohai Sea have good prospects of oil and gas resources. Therefore the geological and mining industry circles have consistently attached importance to this region.

The region is one of the regions where geological investigations were carried out earlier in China. It has a history of nearly 120 years of geological investigations, and abundant data have been collected. Before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, howere, most geological investigation work was paid to researches on stratigraphy and palaeontology. With the development of the national economy, unified organizations and leadership came into being, a variety of geological survey parties were set up, and many geological colleges and research institutions were established. Hence the geological work in the region have been developing rapidly and the level of geological research have been raised greatly.

In addition to the preface and concluding remarks, there are five parts. Part 1 describes stratigraphy, Part 2 concerns magmatic rocks and magmatism, Part 3 deals with regional metamorphic rocks and metamorphism, Part 4 considers geological structure, and Part 5 discusses the history of geological development. Besides, three main maps are accompanied: the Geological Map of Hebei Province, Beijing Municipality and Tianjin Municipality at a scale of 1: 500, 000, the Magmatic Map of Hebei Province, Beijing Municipality and Tianjin Municipality at a scale of 1: 1, 000, 000 and the Tectonic Map of Hebei Province, Beijing Municipality and Tianjin Municipality at the same scale.
