To Record and illustrate the causes of disaster, disaster range, disaster losses, emergency response, spatial and temporal distribution and process of the post-disaster restoration and reconstruction, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and the National Development and Reform Commission decided to compile the Atlas of Wenchuan Earthquake Disaster. The Atlas aims at providing useful references for the government’s decision-making in large-scale disasters, comprehensive information for relevant scientific research, and documentation for the public awarenesss of disaster prevention and reduction. The Atlas of Wenchuan Earthquake Disaster Consists of 8 graphic groups including background, natural environment social and economic system, natural hazards, disaster assessment, disaster response, restoration and reconstruction, and an appendix. The “Background” mainly shows the geographic boundary of the affected areas by Wenchuan Earthquake and ghe general information of the disaster. The “Natural Environment” illustrates the fundamental information of the natural environment, geological structure, land surface cover, etc. in the earthquake-stricken regions. The “Social and Economic system” gives the information about the population, cities and towns, transportation, communications, irrigation, resources, economy etc. before the earthquake. The “Natural Hazards” mainly illustrates the earthquake hazards and the associated secondary hazards. The “Disaster Assessment” shows the temporal and spatial distribution of casualties, losses of properties, and the damage to the resource and environment. The “Disaster Response” is a comprehensive record of the emergency rescue, evacuations and settlements in which the Party, the government, and all in our community went all out to overcome difficulties. The “Restoration and Reconstruction” Provides information of the reconstruction plan and the pairing assistance.
